Olympic Oath

The Olympic Oath is a solemn promise made by one athlete, as a representative of each of the participating Olympic competitors; and by one judge, as a representative of each officiating Olympic referee or other official, at the opening ceremonies of each Olympic Games. In the ancient Olympic Games athletes used to take oath Olympic Oathstanding before the statue of Zeus. Chief Judges played an important role at the oath-taking ceremony. In the modern Olympics the Olympic Oath was first administered at the 1920 Games. It is now taken at the opening ceremony by an outstanding athlete of the host country, who pledges, on behalf of all the athletes, to strive for victory in a spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. One of the Greek Olympic stamps captured one such oath taking ceremony.
