unknown olympic sports - lacrosse
The Olympic Games are always ready to include the finest examples of national sport, as they pass on to us the heritage of our ancestors and offer us a deeper appreciation of that great human activity which is called sport.
The first of such games to be included among the events of the Olympics was lacrosse, which was a slightly modified version of an ancient Red Indian ball game called 'Baggataway'. It was once played among many Red Indian tribe. The players would try with the aid of special netted clubs to get the ball to a goal post on their opponent's side by means of a complicated series of movements which demanded speed, agility and a considerable degree of physical strength. Lacrosse is played on a grass court in four 15 minute periods. The aim is to drive the ball through the opposing team's goal. Lacrosse was made an event in the Olympic Games in 1904 and it was included on the programme of events in 1908, 1928, 1932 and 1948, though it was only in 1904 that the teams competed for Olympic awards. The only stamp in the world devoted to lacrosse was issued by Canada in 1968. In depicting the game the designer has paid tribute to its origins, for next to the modern players stand an Indian.
